How to Get Out of a Reading Slump

It happens to the best of us. You finish a truly incredible, five-star book, and suddenly... nothing else works. You pick up a new book, read a paragraph, and put it down. You try another one. Nothing. You are officially in a reading slump.
A reading slump can feel frustrating, especially when your TBR (To Be Read) pile is staring at you accusingly. But the harder you try to force yourself through a massive, 800-page dense fantasy novel, the worse the slump gets.
Here is how you break it.
1. Switch Genres Completely
If you usually read heavy non-fiction, pick up a cheesy romance. If you normally read slow-burn fantasy, grab a fast-paced thriller. Your brain needs a palette cleanser.
2. Read a Novella

Do not commit to a massive series. Pick up something under 200 pages. The psychological reward of finishing a book quickly will immediately rewire your brain to want to read more. If you want the ultimate slump-breaker, read All Systems Red (The Murderbot Diaries) by Martha Wells. It is short, hilarious, action-packed, and stars a heavily armed cyborg who just wants to be left alone to watch soap operas. 3. Reread a Comfort Book
There is no rule that says you always have to read something new. Return to an old favorite where you already know you love the characters.
4. Stop Stressing About New Releases
One major cause of slumps is the anxiety of trying to keep up with every new book hitting the shelves. Take the pressure off. Add your favorite authors to your Bleepia tracking list, and let us remember their release dates. You can read them whenever you are actually ready, without the FOMO.
