Stephen King's Carrie Gets a New Prime Video Adaptation

A new Stephen King Carrie adaptation is heading to screens this autumn, and Prime Video has just confirmed exactly when. The streamer released the full trailer for its eight-part series on 9 September, alongside a premiere date of 7 October, which means fans of King's 1974 debut novel now have a firm date to work towards, as Variety reported.

The series comes from showrunner Mike Flanagan, whose earlier King adaptations include Gerald's Game, Doctor Sleep and The Life of Chuck.

The show was first reported to be in development in October 2024 and was officially greenlit by Amazon in April 2025.

Stephen King himself is on board as an executive producer, and the full run of eight episodes will land on Prime Video in one go on 7 October, as confirmed by TVInsider.

Summer H. Howell takes the title role of Carrie White, with Siena Agudong playing Sue Snell and Matthew Lillard as Principal Grayle.

Previous adaptations of Carrie include Brian De Palma's 1976 film with Sissy Spacek, a 1999 sequel, a 2002 television film, and a 2013 remake starring Chloë Grace Moretz.

This new version is billed as the character's first outing as a full television series rather than a film, which is a notable first for a book that has already been through several screen lives.

The story itself stays close to King's original premise. It follows a sheltered teenager whose home life with a controlling mother collides with the harsh realities of public high school, just as she begins to discover unsettling telekinetic powers. Flanagan has described bringing the material into a more contemporary setting, with the pressures of school life reframed for a social-media age, though the bones of King's plot remain recognisably his.

King's debut has always held a particular place in his career.
